In June of 1993, Kate Hoepke, author of Mothers Club: Nurturing the Nurturers, presented a workshop on how to start a social support network for young families. The workshop was attended by mothers from all over Marin, including three moms from Southern Marin: Linda Lam, Anna Knox, and Julie Stanton. These three women plus 12 more comprised the founding members of what is now the Southern Marin Mothers' Club. Over the next few months, these 15 women were trained by Kate Hoepke to lay the foundations of the club. After spreading the word, they held their breath that moms would show up at their first meeting in November 1993. They didn’t need to worry - the first meeting was very well attended and the club quickly grew to over 100 members within a few months. The club was founded with $750 start-up capital raised by donations from the Rotary Clubs in Tiburon and Sausalito, as well as the personal business of a Mill Valley Rotary Club member. Now, many years later, SMMC membership has grown to over 1500 with over 60 volunteers in place to support the Club’s growth and operation.
