GIVE BACK THIS HOLIDAY SEASON: MEANINGFUL WAYS TO SUPPORT MARIN FAMILIES

By: Sarah Dobrovolny, Director of SMMC Philanthropy  |  December 5, 2024

Looking to make a difference with your family this December? Explore these impactful ways to bring joy to Marin families in need. Each of these opportunities supports SMMC’s trusted nonprofit partners, organizations that serve local families year-round. Whether you prefer donating gently used items, purchasing new gifts, volunteering your time, or giving a monetary donation, there’s a way for everyone to give back.

If you’d like more information or to get involved with additional SMMC philanthropic activities, email us at philanthropy@southernmarinmoms.com.

Postpartum Support Center (PPSC)

Clean out the toy bin before the holiday rush! Donate new or gently used toys to PPSC, which serves over 500 families each month. Drop off unwrapped toys at their San Rafael office by Thursday, December 10:

  • Mon/Tues/Thurs/Fri: 10 AM – 5 PM
  • Wed: 3 PM – 7 PM

Other needed items include: diapers/pull-ups (sizes 4-7, open packs accepted), wipes, strollers, high chairs, Similac Advance Formula, nursing pads, new/gently used bottles, toddler clothes (sizes 18 months to 5T), toddler shoes, diaper pails, potty chairs, and chapter books. (Not accepted: car seats, cribs, used breast pumps/parts.)

Marin County Cooperation Team (MCCT)

Support vulnerable Marin families by fulfilling Christmas wishes or donating funds. Last year, SMMC helped 7 families in MCCT’s Safety Net Services Program, and this year MCCT aims to assist 10.

Gilead House

Gilead House is home to six resilient families—single mothers and their children—who are working hard to overcome homelessness and build stable futures. This December, you can help make a difference by providing much-needed support.

Here’s how you can contribute:

  • Donate Gift Cards: Safeway and Visa gift cards are requested to help these families cover essential food and gas expenses. Contribute HERE >> by December 18.
  • Shop Their Wishlist: Select and purchase household supplies directly from the Gilead House Amazon Wishlist.

Marin Foster Care

Love shopping for the perfect gift or prefer the convenience of online shopping? Either way, you can bring joy to Marin's foster youth this holiday season! Here's how you can help:

  • Participate in Their Toy Drive: Drop off a new, unwrapped toy for any age (child, tween, teen) at their office (55 Mitchell Blvd, Suite 2, San Rafael) by December 16. Office hours are Mon/Wed/Thurs/Fri 9:30 AM - 2 PM and Tues 2 PM - 6 PM.
  • Shop Their Wish Lists: Browse and buy items directly from their Amazon wish lists for kids, tweens/teens, or stocking stuffers.

Matrix Parent Network & Resource Center

Matrix, a program of Marin Center for Independent Living, works to empower families of children living with disabilities to understand and access the systems that serve them in Marin, Solano, Sonoma, and Napa counties. Every year, Matrix puts on an annual Inclusive Santa event for families, and while it's officially sold out, they are in need of volunteers! The event is on December 7 in Petaluma and volunteer needs include:

  • Setup and decorating before the event
  • Being an activity table "buddy" and supporting families on their way to meet Santa
  • Post-event tear down and clean up

Homeward Bound of Marin

Fresh Starts Culinary Academy is a Homeward Bound program that helps people develop skills and confidence for employment in the busy culinary industry.

  • Their made-in-house gourmet HALO products, including peppermint bark, fruit jam, pickles, hot sauce, honey, and more, draw on seasonal ingredients and include items harvested from their on-site produce garden.
  •  Wagster Treats are premium dog biscuits baked in their training kitchen. They combine familiar ingredients like apples, oats, coconut and peanut butter.

View the order form to place your order. You can also stop by the Homeward Bound of Marin Administration Office (1385 N. Hamilton Parkway in Novato) and shop any weekday from 9 AM to 5 PM.

All proceeds from your purchase support shelter, housing, and training programs at Homeward Bound of Marin.

Make this holiday season extra special by giving back in a way that resonates with your family. Together, we can spread warmth, joy, and kindness throughout our community!
