A CALL FOR LOVE
By: Denise E. Bailey | February 6, 2024
The
Crier
theme this month on love is my absolute favorite. Over the past three years, I’ve written about
interracial marriage
,
loving yourself
, and how we must
love other mamas
. This year, I have a heartfelt request: let’s commit to loving those we perceive as unlovable. It may sound like a strange challenge, but I believe it’s a crucial step toward healing and connection. So grab a cup of tea, and let’s reflect together—this may be the most meaningful task you take on in 2025.
As a society, we often feel deeply divided. Social media and other influences can create echo chambers that amplify differences and make it easy to dismiss or judge others. We categorize people based on single actions or facts, and it’s easy to forget that at our core, we are far more alike than different. Somewhere along the way, we’ve lost our ability to truly connect with those who see the world differently.
The truth is, regardless of our backgrounds, beliefs, or lifestyles, our shared values as human beings unite us. We all want to feel seen, heard, safe, and loved. We long for connection, opportunity, and the chance to make a difference. If we can focus on what unites us rather than what divides us, we can start to rebuild bridges.
In this month of love, I encourage you to challenge your assumptions and look for the humanity in others. Take time to listen, to learn, and to understand perspectives that may differ from your own. It’s not about persuasion or agreement—it’s about finding common ground.
Most importantly, let’s model this openness for our children. They are watching and learning from us every day. By sowing seeds of empathy and understanding now, we can create a future rooted in kindness and connection.
Let’s make 2025 a year of building bridges, one act of love at a time.
